The Voivode Stephen the Great and Saint Route in Romania and the Republic of Moldova
Stephen the Great was the greatest ruler Moldova ever had, reigning between 1457 and 1504. His qualities as a skilled strategist and diplomat, his initiatives to promote culture by founding an impressive number of churches and monasteries, and the battles he fought and won to defend the country’s integrity turned him into a legendary hero.
The Voivode Stephen the Great and Saint Route in Romania and the Republic of Moldova will pass through eighteen localities in Romania, eleven localities in the Republic of Moldova, and thirteen wine estates, offering tourists a lesson in history and spirituality through its landmarks. These include the monasteries he founded, fortified citadels, and ancient royal cellars (hrube) over 500 years old, whose legacy has been preserved to this day. Last but not least, the route features museums hosting exhibitions with artifacts from the reign of Voivode Stephen the Great and Saint.
